Bones found on island might be Amelia Earhart's
NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — The three bone fragments turned up on a deserted South Pacific island that lay along the course Amelia Earhart was following when she vanished. Nearby were several tantalizing artifacts: some old makeup, some glass bottles and shells that had been cut open.
Now scientists at the University of Oklahoma hope to extract DNA from the tiny bone chips in tests that could prove Earhart died as a castaway after failing in her 1937 quest to become the first woman to fly around the world.
"There's no guarantee," said Ric Gillespie, director of the International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery, a group of aviation enthusiasts in Delaware that found the pieces of bone this year while on an expedition to Nikumaroro Island, about 1,800 miles south of Hawaii.
"You only have to say you have a bone that may be human and may be linked to Earhart and people get excited. But it is true that, if they can get DNA, and if they can match it to Amelia Earhart's DNA, that's pretty good."
It could be months before scientists know for sure — and it could turn out the bones are from a turtle. The fragments were found near a hollowed-out turtle shell that might have been used to collect rain water, but there were no other turtle parts nearby.
Earhart's disappearance on July 2, 1937, remains one of the 20th century's most enduring mysteries. Did she run out of fuel and crash at sea? Did her Lockheed Electra develop engine trouble? Did she spot the island from the sky and attempt to land on a nearby reef?
"What were her last moments like? What was she doing? What happened?" asked Robin Jensen, an associate professor of communications at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind., who has studied Earhart's writings and speeches.
Since 1989, Gillespie's group has made 10 trips to the island, trying each time to find clues that might help determine the fate of Earhart and her navigator, Fred Noonan.
Last spring, volunteers working at what seemed to be an abandoned campsite found one piece of bone that appeared to be from a neck and another unknown fragment dissimilar to bird or fish bones. A third fragment might be from a finger. The largest of the pieces is just over an inch long.
The area was near a site where native work crews found skeletal remains in 1940. Bird and fish carcasses suggested Westerners had prepared meals there.
"This site tells the story of how someone or some people attempted to live as castaways," Gillespie said Friday in an interview with The Associated Press. "These fish weren't eaten like Pacific Islanders" eat fish.
Millions of dollars have been spent in failed attempts to learn what happened to Earhart, a Kansas native declared dead by a California court in early 1939.
The official version says Earhart and Noonan ran out of fuel and crashed at sea while flying from Lae, New Guinea, to Howland Island, which had a landing strip and fuel.
Gillespie's book "Finding Amelia: The True Story of the Earhart Disappearance," and "Amelia Earhart's Shoes," written by four volunteers from the aircraft group, suggest the pair landed on the reef and survived, perhaps for months, on scant food and rainwater.
Gillespie, a pilot, said the aviator would have needed only about 700 feet of unobstructed space to land because her plane would have been traveling only about 55 mph at touchdown.
"It looks like she could have landed successfully on the reef surrounding the island. It's very flat and smooth," Gillespie said. "At low tide, it looks like this place is surrounded by a parking lot."
However, Gillespie said, the plane, even if it landed safely, would have been slowly dragged into the sea by the tides. The waters off the reef are 1,000 to 2,000 feet deep. His group needs $3 million to $5 million for a deep-sea dive.
The island is on the course Earhart planned to follow from Lae, New Guinea, to Howland Island, which had a landing strip and fuel. Over the last seven decades, searches of the remote atoll have been inconclusive.
After the latest find, anthropologists who had previously worked with Gillespie's group suggested that he send the bones to the University of Oklahoma's Molecular Anthropology Laboratory, which has experience extracting genetic material from old bones. Gillespie's group also has a genetic sample from an Earhart female relative for comparison with the bones.
The lab is looking for mitochondrial DNA, which is passed along only through females, so there is no need to have a Noonan sample.
Cecil Lewis, an assistant professor of anthropology at the lab, said the university received a little more than a gram of bone fragments about two weeks ago. If researchers are able to extract DNA and link it to Earhart, a sample would be sent to another lab for verification.
"Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. That's why we're trying to downplay a lot of the media attention right now," Lewis said. "For all we know, this is just a turtle bone, and a lot of people are going to be very disheartened."
Under the best circumstances, the analysis would take two weeks. If scientists have trouble with the sample, that time frame could stretch into months, Lewis said.
"Ancient DNA is incredibly unpredictable," he said.
Other material recovered this year also suggested the presence of Westerners at the isolated island site:
— Someone carried shells ashore before cutting them open and slicing out the meat. Islanders cut the meat out at sea.
— Bottles found nearby were melted on the bottom, suggesting they had been put into a fire, possibly to boil water. (A Coast Guard unit on the island during World War II would have had no need to boil water.)
— Bits of makeup were found. The group is checking to see which products Earhart endorsed and whether an inventory lists specific types of makeup carried on her final trip.
— A glass bottle with remnants of lanolin and oil, possibly hand lotion.
In 2007, the group found a piece of a pocket knife but didn't know whether it was left by the Coast Guard or castaways. This year, it found the shattered remains of the knife, suggesting someone had smashed it to extract the blades. Gillespie speculated a castaway used a blade to make a spear to stab shallow-water fish like those found at the campsite.
Following Earhart's disappearance, distress signals picked up by distant ships pointed back to the area of Nikumaroro Island, but while pilots passing over saw signs of recent habitation, the island was crossed off the list as having been searched, Gillespie said.
In 1940, a British overseer on the island recovered a partial human skeleton, a woman's shoe and an empty sextant box at what appeared to be a former campsite, littered with turtle, clamshell and bird remains.
Thinking of Earhart, the overseer sent the items to Fiji, where a British doctor decided they belonged to a stocky European or mixed-blood male, ruling out any Earhart connection.
The bones later vanished, but in 1998, Gillespie's group located the doctor's notes in London. Two other forensic specialists reviewed the doctor's bone measurements and agreed they were more "consistent with" a female of northern European descent, about Earhart's age and height.
On their own visits to the island, volunteers recovered an aluminum panel that could be from an Electra, another piece of a woman's shoe and a "cat's paw" heel dating from the 1930s; another shoe heel, possibly a man's, and an oddly cut piece of clear Plexiglas.
The sextant box might have been Noonan's. The woman's shoe and heel resemble a blucher-style oxford seen in a pre-takeoff photo of Earhart. The plastic shard is the exact thickness and curvature of an Electra's side window.
The body of evidence is intriguing, but Gillespie insists the team is "constantly agonizing over whether we are being dragged down a path that isn't right."

40-Year-Old Virgin' Actor Sentenced to Life in
Prison for Stabbing
It's life in prison for actor Shelley Malil, who was sentenced by San Diego County Superior Court Judge Harry Elias on Thursday, the Associated Press reports.
In 2008, Malil stabbed his ex-girlfriend Kendra Beebe more than 20 times. The day after the pair had an argument, Malil showed up unannounced to Beebe's home and reportedly flew into a jealous rage when he found another man there. He then approached Beebe and stabbed her repeatedly with a steak knife. She suffered punctured lungs and wounds to her neck, chest, back and arms.
This past September, Malil, 45, took the stand in his own defense and claimed that he thought Beebe was someone else, who had been attacking him in the dark.
Additionally, Malil's attorney claimed his client had no intention of killing Beebe. The defense also attempted to question Beebe's character to the jury, saying that she was "a violent drama queen who tried to make men jealous," according to the AP.
But the defense tactics failed, and Malil was convicted by a jury for attempted premeditated murder and assault with a deadly weapon.
Malil (whom fans remember from the 2005 hit comedy The 40-Year-Old Virgin, in which he played Steve Carell's co-worker) addressed the court before his sentencing. "I want to do whatever I need to do to make sure I make right from the wrong that I did," he said. "Kendra Beebe did not deserve anything that happened to her. ... I can't even begin to imagine what she has been through."
Beebe also spoke up in court. "Despite the stab wounds he inflicted, I am alive," she said. Beebe (who met Malil online and said their relationship eventually became "volatile") also addressed Malil's behavior throughout the trail. "During the course of the trial it became clear he was an actor, but not a very good actor at that," she said. "His testimony was lie after lie after lie."
After the sentencing, Beebe told reporters she believed justice was served and hoped that Malil's apology was sincere.
While Malil is eligible for parole in 12 years, prosecutor Keith Watanabe said he could be out in as little as nine years, factoring in his time in prison already, as well as good behavior.

It should be coming to you shortly.

army navy game
army navy game
I am a liberal Democrat who is opposed to the War in Afghanistan, was against the War in Iraq, and protested against the Vietnam War years ago. I guess you could call me a pacifist. But I love watching the Army-Navy game.
I fill up with pride every time I see the Navy Midshipmen of the United States Naval Academy (Annapolis, Maryland) in their formal blues and the Army Cadets of the United States Military Academy (West Point, New York) in their gray uniforms march onto the field for the annual Army-Navy football match-up.
It doesn't matter if you are conservative or liberal, Democrat or Republican, male or female. Everyone I know believes in supporting and praising our brave troops. One can disagree with war policy but still appreciate the sacrifices our soldiers and their families make for our country.
My father is an ex-Marine who served in Iwo Jima during World War II. I feel we Americans can never repay him and his generation of war heroes for what they have done, not just for this nation, but the world.
Having seen war first-hand, my dad is also a pacifist. But that doesn't mean he can't accept the thankfulness of a new generation of Americans. He sports his Iwo Jima Marine cap with pride. Whenever he wears it in public, people come up to him to show their appreciation, at times even offering to buy his dinner.
This mutual admiration for our Armed Forces is one of the reasons that the Army-Navy game, which will be played Saturday (2:30 p.m.) at Lincoln Financial Field -- home of the Philadelphia Eagles -- is an event that transcends politics and sports. As a sporting event, it has lost some of its athletic significance through its 110 years. There was a time (in 1926, 1944, 1945, and 1963) when the game actually had national championship implications. However, since then -- as top level college football has developed into a training ground for the NFL -- military commitment, high academic entrance requirements, and height and weight limits have reduced the overall competitiveness of both academies.
So sports-wise, it's not the Super Bowl or NCAA championship or even the level of some of the college bowls. But as a tradition and century-old rivalry, no event can match it. Navy leads the series 54-49-7. One of the great appeals of the game may be that few, if any, of the participants will ever play in the NFL (Roger Staubach, Phil McConkey, and Napoleon McCallum being notable exceptions), hence they are playing solely for the love of the game (and the rivalry and the Thompson Cup, named after its donor, Robert M. Thompson).
There is also the pomp and circumstance. Journalist Joseph P. Owens of the ExpressTimes wrote of the 2009 Army-Navy contest at Lincoln Financial Field: "The game was entertaining, but the memories are made in all the pageantry and festivities before the game." Last year's event featured the Navy Leap Frogs parachuting into the stadium. Navy won, 17-3.
Usually, high ranking officers such as the Secretary of Defense (Robert Gates in 2009) and even the Commander in Chief attend. In fact, the contest has been nicknamed the "President's Game." The tradition of presidents attending began in 1901 with Theodore Roosevelt. Former Presidents Calvin Coolidge, Harry S. Truman, John F. Kennedy, Gerald Ford, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush all have presided over the event. Ironically, Dwight G. Eisenhower, the only U.S. president to play in the game (Eisenhower played for the Army Cadets in a 6-0 loss in 1912), and Jimmy Carter, the only other U.S. President to go to one of the academies (USNA), never attended the competition as president.
Regarding Presidential visits, the most emotional games played may have been in 1963 and 2001. President John F. Kennedy was a Navy hero in WWII and he attended in 1961 and 1962, initiating the practice of having the Commander in Chief do the pre-game coin toss. He was assassinated on November 22, 1963, eight days before he was supposed to attend the Army-Navy event.
The was postponed and subsequently rescheduled for a week later at the request of his widow, former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy, who felt it would be healing for the nation to proceed as planned and a "fitting tribute" to Jack. Navy won behind quarterback and future Dallas Cowboys Hall of Famer Roger Staubach, 21-15, in a thriller at Philadelphia's Municipal Stadium (renamed JFK Stadium a year later).
2001's contest took place less than three months after the events of 9/11. President George W. Bush stated during the TV broadcast that the 102nd game taking place at Veterans Stadium might be seen in a different light because "a lot of the young men on the playing field will end up in Afghanistan or somewhere else." The Cadets won that year, 26-17.
During wartime the game is even more poignant because some seniors will not return once they are deployed, and much of the sentiment of the event goes out to those who share the uniform and who are overseas.
On November 27, 1926, the Army-Navy game was played in Chicago for the National Dedication of Soldier Field and a monument to American servicemen who had fought in World War I. Navy entered the game undefeated and West Point had only lost one time (to Notre Dame), so the game would decide the national championship. Before a crowd of 100,000, the teams fought to a 21-21 tie and Navy was awarded the national title.
Another interesting fact is that Navy Midshipman (and future Admiral) Joseph Mason Reeves wore what is widely considered the first football helmet in the 1893 game. Having been advised by a Navy doctor that another hit to his head would result in "instant insanity" or even death, Reeves paid an Annapolis shoemaker to make him a leather helmet. It seems they had even worse concussion problems back then.
Although a bidding process for hosting the game began in 2008, the event has been most frequently held in Philadelphia, which is equidistant from the two academies. I am from the Philadelphia suburbs and feel that we in the tri-state area have been blessed to host this event for over 80 years.
A friend of mine told a story where, when he was a boy in 1977, he and a friend and his family were driving to the Army-Navy game in Philly on a blustery 30 degree day when they saw a cadet in full winter dress standing on a street corner just outside of town. They asked if he needed a lift and he said he was staying at an overflow hotel. They obliged him and gave him a ride to City Hall. They felt it was the least they could do for someone who has pledged to serve our country. Such is the respect and honor shown cadets and midshipmen by the Philadelphia area residents that continues to this day.
When I was a music student at West Chester State College, I remember two flute players bragging about how they had boyfriends that were going to Annapolis (USNA). It was a big, prestigious deal then and still is now.
Philadelphia sports fans often get a bad rap. Sometimes it is deserved, as some Eagles fans did boo Santa Claus (albeit a lame-looking one) and throw snowballs on the field (sometimes to win a bet with a sitting mayor), while some Phillies fans do occasionally interrupt games by running around in the outfield (until they are tackled, tased or tripped by Braves outfielders). But as far as the Army-Navy game, the fans' behavior has generally been exemplary (with a tragic exception of exuberant fans leaning on a Vet Stadium railing, only to have it give way and lead to serious injury).
Perhaps the crowds attending "America's Game" are reflecting the Armed Forces' principles of honor, integrity, pride, respect, discipline, strength, and courage.
Saturday's Army-Navy game will televised on CBS. I will be watching. To me, it is a contest where there are no real losers; only winners. Although President Obama will not be attending this year, I know I will once again be filled with American pride. Just as presidents in the past have switched seats to the opposite side at halftime, I watch the game with no real stake in the outcome but admire the competitors, knowing both sides are deserving of our respect and support.

Today is the feast of St. Nicholas.
The true story of Santa Claus begins with Nicholas, who was born during the third century in the village of Patara. At the time the area was Greek and is now on the southern coast of Turkey. His wealthy parents, who raised him to be a devout Christian, died in an epidemic while Nicholas was still young. Obeying Jesus' words to "sell what you own and give the money to the poor," Nicholas used his whole inheritance to assist the needy, the sick, and the suffering. He dedicated his life to serving God and was made Bishop of Myra while still a young man. Bishop Nicholas became known throughout the land for his generosity to the those in need, his love for children, and his concern for sailors and ships.
Nicholas, An Advent Saint
Advent is the time when Christians prepare to greet Christ—who came as a babe in a manger, who comes into our lives each day, and who will come again at the end of time. Advent is the time when people of faith are most at odds with the culture. The church calls people to focus on getting ready to receive Christ—preparing hearts and lives to make room for Jesus, to live as he would have us live. It is a time of longing, not fulfillment. Quiet reflection, not celebration. The culture, however, is already in a time of festivity, unable or unwilling, to wait and contemplate and prepare for the real festival. It is not easy to observe Advent without being pulled prematurely into Christmas.
How does St. Nicholas fit into all of this? He is an Advent saint because his December 6th feast day always falls in early Advent (Advent begins four Sundays before Christmas between November 27 and December 3). However, Nicholas is a good Advent saint for more important reasons than the date of his special day. Whatever he did, and it is said that he did many kinds of amazing things, may not be as important as the way he did it. Nicholas became so popular because he was a faithful follower of Jesus Christ. His life clearly reflected the way each one of us is called to show God's love to others, especially those in need.
Celebrating St. Nicholas on his day in Advent brings a bit of fun and festivity into homes, churches, and schools. His small treats and surprises help keep the spirit of good St. Nicholas, especially when stories of his goodness and kind deeds are told and ways to express his care for those in need are sought. Saint Nicholas helps us remember Christmas is a feast of love, hope, kindness and generosity. Yes, Nicholas is a good Advent saint.

ben roethlisberger broken nose
ben roethlisberger broken nose
On Pittsburgh’s opening drive Sunday night against the Ravens, quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was sacked by Baltimore’s defense to force a punt. Defensive tackle Haloti Ngata got his hand through Roethlisberger’s facemask and was able to rearrange the quarterback’s beak with a paw to the face. Check out the damage it did in these pictures of Ben Roethlisberger’s broken nose:
Big Ben was bleeding and the trainers seemed to pop it back into place prior to the team’s next drive. As if playing with a broken foot wasn’t enough, Roethlisberger also had to play through a displaced beak. The Pittsburgh quarterback sure is a tough character for playing through all the injuries, but he’s not as tough as this guy.

Who’s your favorite game character of all time and why? Did you base your decision on the speed it has or purely out of amazement for its features and looks? Well, these are questions only you can answer of course. What would happen if you put them in a race to see who could cross the finish line first? Are you confident enough that your favorite character would win the gold medal in such a race, or is it just a dream? And how can you be sure who would win if you don’t have the proof to back it up?

Niagara Draws Penn State in 2010 NCAA Volleyball Championship
NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Niagara volleyball team drew the three-time defending NCAA champion Penn State Nittany Lions in the 2010 NCAA Tournament First Round. The Purple Eagles will play at the No. 4 seed Nittany Lions on Friday, Dec. 3.
“We deserve to be here (in the NCAA Tournament),” Niagara head coach Susan Clements said. “We won 19 in a row and beat some good teams. We need to play hard and hope good things happen.”
Niagara (25-8) is making its second-ever trip to the NCAA Tournament after the Purple Eagles defended their MAAC Tournament title with a straight-set victory over Iona in the 2010 MAAC Championship. Niagara faced another Big Ten opponent, the Michigan Wolverines, in last season’s first round.
The Purple Eagles will take their program-best 19-match win streak, which is the sixth longest streak in the nation, into Rec Hall for their first-ever meeting with the Nittany Lions. PSU (26-5) won its eighth consecutive Big Ten title this season and enters this season’s tournament looking for its fourth straight national title.
As the national fourth seed, the Nittany Lions will host one of the four regionals which includes No. 5 Northern Iowa, No. 12 Duke and No. 13 LSU. Virginia Tech (19-11) and Delaware (26-5) will play in the other first round match at Rec Hall on Friday.

road runner cartoon
road runner cartoon
As you are likely now aware, people on Facebook are changing their profile pictures to shots of cartoon characters from the 80’s in an effort to speak out against childhood violence.
Another favorite are the Warner Brothers’ cartoons. Bugs Bunny, the Road Runner, Daffy Duck, Tweety Bird, Sylvester Cat, Elmer Fudd, Yosemite Sam, Wile E. Coyote, Foghorn Leghorn, Porky Pig, Pepe Le Pew, Speedy Gonzales, and more, received their best network television treatment on CBS’ The Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Hour.
The classic Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies half-hour cartoons first aired on prime-time network television in 1960-1962. CBS’ The Road Runner Show, premiered on September 10, 1966 and was telecast for two years until September 7, 1968. Its episodes consisted of three cartoons, one with the Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote, one with Tweety and Sylvester, and one with a rather eclectic selection of Warner Brothers cartoon characters.
In 1968, when CBS acquired the network broadcast rights to Bugs Bunny’s television show, it decided to merge the two television programs into one, and The Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Hour was born.
nam phan
nam phan
Nam Phan dominated all three rounds of his bout with Leonard Garcia, coming extremely close to finishing the fight in round two. Garcia used his typical style of coming forward and throwing wild punches that rarely land but look "flashy" while Phan was controlled in landing combinations to the head and body. Garcia was exhausted starting in the second round and it allowed Phan to simply avoid damage in the early part of the rounds but take over during the later part.
Most fans had a feeling that Garcia would win the judges decision though and that is exactly what happened. While SBNation saw the fight 30-26 for Phan, giving him round 2 10-8. Two judges saw the fight 29-28 for Garcia with the third seeing it 30-27 for Phan. It is nothing new for Garcia who rightfully could be 0-7 in his last seven bouts but instead is 3-3-1 winning three split decisions with a split draw thrown in for good measure.
Judging in MMA is something that has to change and no system is going to work with judges who do not understand that walking forward throwing arm punches that don't land does not beat out the other guy actually landing short, crisp punches.

evan almighty
evan almighty
This evening I watched the movie Evan Almighty starring Steve Carrell. I may not have given it my full attention, but a few things stuck out.
Clearly this movie is too spoofish to really be called truly religious, but while religion is made light of, I thought some of the themes were disturbing. Morgan Freeman as God meets Evan's wife (name already forgotten) and says that the story of Noah's Ark is not about God's wrath, but his love.
Are you kidding me? This was so absurd, I nearly choked. It's a nice platitude, but it doesn't align in the slightest with what's in the Bible. Frankly, it's stories like these of a capriciously vicious God that helped turn me away from religion. Even as a pliant worshipper, I saw nothing cheery about the obliteration of nearly all of humanity.
Nice try making a comedy out of it, but don't BS me. If even the goofy Morgan Freeman God of this movie were real, he's got a lot to answer for.

Anne of Green Gables, by L.M. Montgomery
Really, though, who didn’t love Anne? Everyone has a soft spot for an orphan, of course, but Anne wasn’t just any orphan. She was sweet and quirky and funny and… a redhead! You guys know I have a soft spot in my heart for redheads (have you seen my husband and baby?!), and that includes characters out of books.
I love books that have these girls with big, strong personalities. Anne was seriously a handful. She was always getting into something or saying the “wrong” thing or just acting exactly how she wanted to act. I was never a quiet kid and I loved how much I could relate to Anne. She loved laughter and fun just for the sake of fun. She was one of these characters who had everything against her but just overcame using her strength and guts. What’s not to love?
I know that at one time I probably read this whole series. To be honest, the only one whose plot I can really remember is Anne of Green Gables. It wasn’t one that I read a lot but I remember just absolutely loving it.

Tinkerbell images are becoming very popular on Facebook this weekend since many people are looking for cartoon pictures for their Facebook profiles. The Facebook meme has gone viral, and the goal is not to see any human faces on Facebook until December 6th as a way to stand up to child abuse and violence. In addition to Tinkerbell images, Minnie Mouse pictures and Wilma Flintstone have also been popular as far as classic cartoon pictures go.
Tinkerbell images range from the older classic Tinkerbell cartoon character image from Peter Pan, to the newer updated version of Tinkerbell from Tinkerbell and the Great Fairy Rescue.
Here are some cute Tinker Bell images for cartoon pictures for your Facebook profile!
