Niagara Draws Penn State in 2010 NCAA Volleyball Championship

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y.  – The Niagara volleyball team drew the three-time defending NCAA champion Penn State Nittany Lions in the 2010 NCAA Tournament First Round. The Purple Eagles will play at the No. 4 seed Nittany Lions on Friday, Dec. 3.

“We deserve to be here (in the NCAA Tournament),” Niagara head coach Susan Clements said. “We won 19 in a row and beat some good teams. We need to play hard and hope good things happen.”

Niagara (25-8) is making its second-ever trip to the NCAA Tournament after the Purple Eagles defended their MAAC Tournament title with a straight-set victory over Iona in the 2010 MAAC Championship. Niagara faced another Big Ten opponent, the Michigan Wolverines, in last season’s first round.

The Purple Eagles will take their program-best 19-match win streak, which is the sixth longest streak in the nation, into Rec Hall for their first-ever meeting with the Nittany Lions. PSU (26-5) won its eighth consecutive Big Ten title this season and enters this season’s tournament looking for its fourth straight national title.

As the national fourth seed, the Nittany Lions will host one of the four regionals which includes No. 5 Northern Iowa, No. 12 Duke and No. 13 LSU. Virginia Tech (19-11) and Delaware (26-5) will play in the other first round match at Rec Hall on Friday.
